From Oregon Ballet Theatre- JUST FOR KIDS! An affordable subscription package designed especially for families, the new children's series includes The Nutcracker, a special one-hour presentation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre's annual performance featuring Christopher Stowell's Peter and the Wolf. It's the perfect way to introduce the kids in your life to ballet. Download subscription form or call 503.2.BALLET.

The Arts Passport for Kids. Oregon Children’s Theatre and Portland Youth Philharmonic team up to create a new youth arts package titled The Arts Passport. The package includes two plays, Miss Nelson is Missing! and The Boxcar Children from Oregon Children’s Theatre and two concerts, the Spring and Winter concert from the Portland Youth Philharmonic. The package is $80 for adults and $60 for children under age 14 and seniors age 62 and above. Tickets can be purchased through the OCT Box Office at 503-228-9571. Portland Art Museum's Family Drop In events take place every Sunday 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Drop in for 10 minutes or an hour of artmaking activities with Museum educators, local artists and instructors. Family Drop-Ins are free to members or with Museum admission. Registration is not required. Visit http://www.pam.org. Saturdays: artmaking program for youth ages 5-7, 1:00 pm. There are so many faces to see and characters to meet at Portland Art Museum! See faces created by artists from many different cultures and times in history using many different materials. View faces in the Museum’s galleries for inspiration and create your own portraits and imaginative faces using a variety of mediums, including graphite, pastel, clay, and watercolor. Class includes visits to the Chuck Close and Leonard Baskin exhibitions. Instructor: Susan Leeb. Fee: $80 for members, $100 for non-members. As of April 23, 2008, all youth under 17years old are admitted free to the Portland Art Musuem.

Family Discovery Sundays in The Lab at Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 NW Davis, Portland. Every last Sunday of the month, 1-4pm, provides an interactive afternoon at the Museum for the whole family to enjoy! Drop by for a hands-on, intergenerational art-making activity led by a local artist. Free and open to all ages; materials provided. MCC's School's Out/Art's In camps offer kids an opportunity for hands-on creative exploration during scheduled days when public school is not in session. Kids will learn about making art with craft-based materials and techniques. Open to children 7-12. Pre-registration required. Email education @MuseumofContemporaryCraft.org or call 503.223.2654.

NW Film Center's Flicker: Film Club for Teens. Meeting the last Saturday of each month during the school year at the Guild Theatre, SW 9th & Taylor at 11am, the club is a chance for teens to meet local filmmakers, view and analyze film, discuss aspects of film production and find out about local film/videomaking resources. Membership is free and no experience is required.

Portland Children's Museum provides an all-day, summer-long FUN pass! There is something different going on seven days a week! Water Works is cool, the Dig Pit has been moved and improved (now with a beautiful mural and working conveyor belt), and the Kid City Market and Café is a prime place to play! Activities include
• 3 art studios (The Garage, The Clay Studio, and The Wonder Corner) humming with creativity, 7 days a week
• Original and entertaining puppet shows twice daily Wednesday through Saturday
• Daily Family Storytime, for all ages (Puppets with Penny).
Tots, Tales and Tunes for our littlest visitors on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
Do the Dishes in our own Clay Glazing Studio on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4:30 p.m.

After-school at 100th Monkey Studio. After-school groups are offered, during the school year.Participants will be provided with planned art project weekly. A healthy snack is also provided.There is a maximum of 8 artists per group. All art materials provided. Elementary Aged are Tuesdays 3-5pm. Middle & High School Aged are Thursdays 3-5pm. Also, workshops are given on No School Days. To register for any group please contact the studio.

Special Competitions, Grants, Workshops or Information in the Arts for Youth

Call for Young Artists with Disabilities. VSA arts and Volkswagen Group America are now accepting entries for Accelerate, a juried exhibition of young emerging artists with disabilities, open to artists between the ages of 16 and 25 who are living in the United States and who have a physical, cognitive, mental, or sensory disability. Submissions must be original work completed within the last three years and after the onset of disability. Eligible media include, but are not limited to, paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil, or charcoal), fine art prints, photography, computer-generated prints, digital art, and time-based media (video, film). Work must have a visual component. Both representational and abstract work are welcomed. The competition will present one grand prize of $20,000, a first award of $10,000, a second award of $6,000, and twelve awards of excellence of $2,000 each. 2009 Rising Star Creative Writing Competition for young writers sponsored by The Nature of Words, Central Oregon's premier literary organization. A new category, the nature essay, has been added to the literary nonfiction genre, and is sponsored by the Deschutes Land Trust. The competition, now in its fourth year, is awarded at the annual literary festival, scheduled for November 4-8, 2009 in Bend, Oregon. Prizes will be awarded in fiction, literary nonfiction and poetry in two age categories, 15-18 and 19-25. Winning writers will receive a cash prize, inclusion of their winning entry in an anthology, recognition in an awards cer emony at the November festival, and a scholarship to one of The Nature of Words workshops in their winning genre. The competition is open to writers in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Competition genres include poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction and literary nonfiction/nature essay. Entrants must mail a check in the amount of $5 per entry (submission fee), payable to The Nature of Words and addressed to P.O. Box 56, Bend, Oregon OR 97709 or pay via the PayPal link at www.thenatureofwords.org/Donate. PayPal payments must include "Rising Star submission fee" in the payment description. 7/6-9 The ReBuilding Center Summer Teen Camp. Hands on workshops for people ages 11-17. Explore The ReBuilding Center this summer and find out what you can create out of all recycled building materials. Learn hand and power tool skills and practice woodworking and construction techniques to craft your own unique pieces of art. Camp takes place in the ReFind Furniture woodshop inside The ReBuilding Center, 3625 N Mississippi Ave.1-4pm. Sliding scale $55-$135 or $15-$35 per day. Classics for Kids Foundation provides matching grants that help bring new, exceptionally fine stringed instruments and mentoring with world-renowned musicians to children while strengthening local community support for music education. The instruments provided through the support of our donors are beyond the reach of most music programs and young musicians. CFKF instruments excite children with their ease of playing and exceptional tone, inspiring them to have fun learning, practice more, and enjoy their instrument. Our renowned mentors further the connection between students and their instruments and between communities and their music programs. Matching grants are open to new and established music programs nationally that serve children grades 3 through 12. Matching instrument grants typically range from $5,000-$40,000. Student Awards.The National Association for Gifted Children has announced the NAGC-Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program for students who have distinguished themselves in academic achievement, leadership, or the visual or performing arts. Maximum Award: $500. Eligibility: one student in every state from the third, fourth, fifth, or sixth grade. http://www.nagc.org/Awards/green/greenawd.html#intro. Deadline: Various.

All Art Schools. Students can use this free comprehensive database of U.S. art schools to search for everything from associate's to doctoral degrees in over 50 business-related concentrations, including painting, theatre, music and art history.
