2009-10 RACC Opportunity Grants (cycle 3)

The Opportunity Grant Program is funded by the City of Portland and is designed to provide grants to Portland-based nonprofit arts and cultural organizations to help meet special opportunities or assist organizations with emergencies that arise during the year and that are not part of the applicant’s annual budget or regular programming. These grants were approved by the RACC Board on January 27, 2010:
KBOO Community Radio ($6,020)
KBOO Community Radio and The Center For Oral History will work with students at Roosevelt HS to train them in the art of Oral History interviewing and media production. Student interviews will provide a platform for artistic work grounded in the stories and life histories of Portlanders. The finished product will be broadcast as a cohesive radio program and a listening and discussion session will be held at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center. Special Opportunity
Live Wire! ($26,625)
Live Wire! has the opportunity to take a critical step in their long-term objective of financial sustainability and national airplay by developing an additional 12 shows for a total of 34 new episodes for a full radio show season on OPB. Having a viable full season brings opportunity for wider distribution and more sponsor appeal. Special Opportunity
Newspace Center for Photography ($11,333)
In order to meet the demands for more classroom space and organizational growth, the Newspace Center for Photography in embarking on expansion into adjacent facilities. The Opportunity Grant will help with costs associated with phase one of occupation of this additional classroom space. Special Opportunity
Portland Taiko ($5,000)
Portland Taiko was honored to be invited to perform in June 2010 at the Minidoka Pilgrimage in Twin Falls, ID, an event serving the memories of people of Japanese ancestry that were interned at this location during WW2. The Opportunity Grant was awarded to help with registration costs, touring production contracts, and increase in staff salaries related to participation in the event. Special Opportunity
