Parking Space
at the Portland Building June 16-July 11, 2008

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Parking Space, by Marylhurst University art student Susan Schnell in the Portland Building Installation Space, June 16-July 11, 2008. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

Susan Schnell will transform the Installation Space into a parking space filled with handmade bicycle forms and bicycle racks. However, these are not your regular bikes. She has covered her handmade welded steel frames with a variety of colorful fabrics that are stitched onto the forms by hand. While the steel provides the structural support, it also (in the artist’s words) “reflects the strength and resilience of those who go somewhere by bike.” The quilted cloth brings the ideas of familiarity and nostalgia to the project while the colorful, stuffed fabrics add a sense of humor as the straight, smooth surface of a tube gives way to a bulge or curve. The artist hopes that her love of bikes (her sole source of transportation) will be conveyed through her lighthearted approach to the installation, and inspire viewers to consider taking a bike ride in the near future.

Background
Susan Schnell is currently an undergraduate student at Marylhurst University. She most recently was part of a group show at the North Bank Artists Gallery in Vancouver, Washington.

Upcoming installations: Cara Tomlinson, Sean Regan, Rachel Hibbard, July 28 – August 22; Paul Rebsom, September 1 – 26; Dan Senn, October 6 – 31; Gabe Shaughnessy, November 10 – December 5; all the art that fits (employee art exhibit), December 10 – January 9, 2009; Carolyn Matsumoto, January 19 – February 13; Robert McConaughy, February 23 – March 20. For more information, contact RACC at 503.823.5111.

A website that features images, proposals and statements of all installations featured in the space since 1994 can be found at www.racc.org/installationspace.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
