Recipient 2008 RACC Project Award; 2004 Portable Works Collection; 2001 Public Art project for Portland Transportation; 1995 RACC Technical Assistance Grant

Since childhood Remedios has endeavored to become a museum quality artist and an activist saving our world from the destructive activities that threaten our natural earth. With these high ideals she finds the inspiration and discipline to move her work in that direction.

Power to the People
by Remedios Rapoport

Having received her BFA degree from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 1989, Remedios began a study of filete porteño; a traditional decorative painting style and technique from Buenos Aires. With various trips to Buenos Aires and sign painting opportunities in Portland, she experimented with ways to merge her sign painting skills, the filete porteño and her fine art interests. By 1999 she began presenting positive ideas supporting the well being of the earth and our communities with an exhibit at the Museo de la Ciudad in Buenos Aires. Beginning with exhibits in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she has taken her visions from different communities to various West Coast and New York area galleries. Her work is in private and public collections both in Buenos Aires and in the Northwest.

Defenders of Fresh Air
by Remedios Rapoport

In 2004 RACC purchased two pieces by Remedios for the Portable Works Collection of Multnomah County. In 2001 she completed a RACC Public Art Project for the City of Portland Department of Transportation (Defenders of Fresh Air). Writing a poem honoring alternative transportation she included it within the filete painting applied to two bicycle lockers on the bus mall.

Her heart felt past works of love, compassion, and other reflections of who we are present a preview of what is to come. The Gentle Revolution exhibit opening February 28, 2008 at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, 5340 N Interstate Avenue, will reveal her latest experiment with various materials and movement in the Gentle Revolution Mobile. Within this mixed media mobile of wood, aluminum, paint, gilding, and found objects she takes her word portraits reflecting non-violent ideas of change and floats them around an earth with rainbow sparkles. The exhibit and mobile are allowing her to join her activist concerns and over 30 years of art making experience into a focused statement. Her work is often inspired by music and cultural heroes that she admires. Her interests in circus and carnival like vintage signs and graphics, the psychedelic art of the 60's and 70's, and impressionist paintings influence her work. Much of her past work is part of the conversation that her current mobile is asking people to consider.

The Gentle Revolution
by Remedios Rapoport

The Gentle Revolution will be a collaborative exhibit of filete sculptures and paintings by Remedios Rapoport with the watercolor political pin-up illustrations of emerging artist Jacquelyn Bond. Remedios received a 2008 Project Grant Award from the Regional Arts and Cultural Council for creation of a mobile within this exhibit and her work as a mentor with Jacquelyn Bond. The community is invited to participate in a dialog during the Artists Tea and panel discussion at IFCC, March 15, 2008, 1:00-3:00 pm. The collaboration will honor the National Women's History Month theme "Women's Art, Women's Vision".

With the exhibit honoring National Women's History Month, women and women's organizations are encouraged to come enjoy it. People and organizations concerned with political, environmental, social justice, and alternative culture issues are also encouraged to enjoy the exhibit. A free "zine" is available at the exhibit to help people connect with others and resources to help heal our world.

With a reverence for all life and a deep love of our earth, Remedios Rapoport's work satisfies her need to do something. To protect our earth and culture from destructive practices. The Gentle Revolution exhibit and mobile become a cohesive place for all of her efforts to fit together.
