Oregon Historical Society is currently recruiting for a Part-time Assistant Editor. The Assistant Editor of the Oregon Historical Quarterly is responsible for the timely production of each issue of the journal. The Assistant Editor meets the production schedule set by the Editor. He or she is responsible for creating pages, proofreading, and launching the journal for printing and for digital distribution. He or she edits some manuscripts for the journal, working with the editor and with authors to ensure that the journal of record for Oregon history maintains high standards for accuracy, intellectual content, and readability. He or she will also maintain financial and administrative records and work with interns, volunteers, and the Rose Tucker Fellow to proofread, maintain the journal’s database, distribute gratis copies, track the book review process, check footnotes, find photographs, and obtain necessary permissions. When possible, he or she represents the Quarterly to the public at conferences and other public venues, helps maintain a strong professional relationship with regional scholars, and visits regional archives and repositories to maintain connections with ongoing research efforts.

Essential Qualifications:
Familiarity with the elements and goals of public history and with academic publishing standards and practices. A thorough understanding of English grammar and usage and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style. Must understand production schedules and pre-production and production processes and be able to work effectively and productively with printers and other vendors. Must have an appreciation for individual writing style and the ability to understand historical argument and interpretation. Can solve problems and think creatively.

Education, Experience, Skills and Knowledge:
Masters degree in history or English (or comparable work experience), with at least one year experience working in scholarly publishing, especially in editing and production. Must have experience in and an understanding of editorial principles and ethics, production techniques and values, and design. Experience working with authors and printers.

Must be adept at using various applications including InDesign, Microsoft Office, PhotoShop, and photograph digitizing.

Job Conditions:
Position is part-time up to 16 hours a week and does not qualify for benefits. Position range is $20-22 per hour. Candidates must have the ability to pass a background check.
