Call for GLEAN: Make Art Not Landfill
Posted:
Updated:
GLEAN (formerly Pacific Northwest Art Program, or PNAP) is entering its second year of seeking to inspire and educate the public on resource conservation and reuse by promoting innovative and sustainable art made by local artists who use materials diverted from the landfill.
The Portland metropolitan region generates more than 2.2 million tons of waste every year. While we can be proud that we recover 50% of this material, our program seeks to enlist artists to help bring awareness to the underlying issues of consumption and to use art as a medium for behavior change.
GLEAN is a partnership between Recology, an employee-owned company that manages a variety of resource recovery facilities; Metro, the regional government for the Portland metropolitan area; and crackedpots, an environmental arts nonprofit.
This juried program will provide five artists from the Portland area (Multnomah, Washington or Clackamas county residents) with access to the Metro Central transfer station to glean materials to use to create art. Selected artists will be paid a $2,000 stipend and 80 percent commission on art sales generated from an art exhibition to be held in September 2012.
Program Elements
• Each Artist will be required to create a minimum of 10 pieces of art to be sold during the exhibition.
• Ninety percent of all art must be created from materials gleaned from Metro Central transfer station.
• Recology and Metro, in collaboration with the artist, will each retain one piece of art (two pieces total) to become part of their permanent public art collections.
• The five selected artists are required to sign an Artist Agreement detailing aspects of the program.
• Each Artist will be paid a $2,000 stipend upon the successful completion of the six-month program.
• Each Artist will receive 80% commission from the sale of their art at the September 2012 exhibition.
