Helen Hiebert's "The Mother Tree"
Posted:
Helen Hiebert's Mother Tree installation shows through July 30 at 'about space' in Portland's South Waterfront (24/7). The life-size handmade paper dress is an expression of the artist's vulnerability, strength and sense of community she feels as a mother. Single strands of crocheted thread extended from the bodice of the dress; as the strands cascade to the floor they turn into roots, symbolizing the mother as a provider and nurturer throughout human development.
Since debuting last February as part of the Portland Building's Installation Space program presented by the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), over three hundred crocheters from around the world have contributed to the piece thus far. The evolving piece is visible day and night through the exhibition at the South Waterfront's 'about space'.
On Friday -- July 30 -- Hiebert will host a closing night reception that is free and open to the public from 6-8pm . Visitors can join Hiebert in constructing one of those winding roots. As well, Portland-based choreographer and dancer Tracy Broyles will also be in attendance. She'll give a performance created specifically around Hiebert's work. Location: Atwater Place in South Waterfront, 3660 S.W. River Parkway.
Installation shows through July 30, 2010 at a window gallery viewble from outside at corner of SW River Parkway & SW Gaines.
The project was funded in part by RACC for the temporary installation space at the Portland Building.
