Public Art Opportunity. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, in conjunction with Sacramento County, invites artists to submit qualifications for potential inclusion in a pre-qualified artist database for upcoming public art opportunities at the Sacramento International Airport. This project, with a budget of $5 million, is the largest public art project in the history of the County. A number of selection panels will be established to review applications for the purpose of establishing a pool of qualified artists working in a variety of media. Media appropriate to the Airport Art Program includes sculpture, ceramic, mosaics, art glass, multi-media, artist-designed lighting elements, or any other durable materials suitable for long-term exposure in an airport environment. Action Sports Film Contest. The Oregon Sports Authority's fourth annual Portland Action Sports Film Contest is offering amateur filmmakers the chance to show off their filmmaking skills as Portland gets set for the AST Dew Tour's Wendy's Invitational, 8/21-24 at the Rose Quarter. Films less than five minutes in length can be submitted online at www.oregonsports.org/action. Action sports fans are encouraged to rate and comment on each of the films submitted. The film contest winner will have their film shown on the Rose Garden big screen during the AST Dew Tour, plus receive four VIP passes to the event. Deadline: 8/8/08.

Call for Artists for 10th Annual Juried Port Townsend Art Show. The Port Townsend Arts Commission and Northwind Arts Alliance are seeking entries for “Expressions Northwest”, the Tenth Annual Art Port Townsend Juried Art Competition which takes place in October. Works in both two- and three- dimensional forms, including photography, are eligible. A total of $2,600 in cash prizes will be awarded. Additionally, merchandise awards will also be presented. The juror for this show will be Barbara Shaiman, Director (artistic and managing) of the Seattle Art Museum, Art Sales and Rental, for the past 18 years. Call to Sculptors. Artists in Action, The City of Keizer, OR and the Keizer Chamber of Commerce invite Oregon sculptors to participate in the “Keizer Public Arts/Art Walk”. This is a project in which sculptors will be paid to display their works for one year in designated areas along River Road in the City of Keizer. Call for Artists. The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center invites visual artists from Washington, Oregon and Idaho to submit their work to a juried theme art exhibit. The exhibit is titled APPLE ART. Each artwork will incorporate the apple as a major element of the work. The City of Wenatchee is the “Apple Capital of the World” and this exhibit celebrates the Apple in Wenatchee and the reopening of the Museum’s Apple Industry exhibit. The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), seeks to purchase existing two-dimensional artworks by emerging Northwest artists for SPU’s Portable Works Collection. The call for artworks is open to emerging artists who live in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho or British Columbia. All types of two-dimensional media will be considered, with special consideration given to colorful artworks. An emerging artist is an artist in the early stage of his or her career (generally five years or less), or is an artist who has caught the eye of an art critic and/or gallery, but has not yet established a solid reputation. The Open Studios Press, creator of New American Paintings, is pleased to announce a new series of juried artist catalogs called Studio Visit, a nationally focused publication that presents all two- and three-dimensional work. Each volume includes approx. 150 artists. Each selected artist will be provided with one full page that will include a full color image, contact information and a brief artist statement. Each volume will be juried by a professional curator and produced to the highest quality standards that can be used as a valuable promotional tool. Literary Submissions: Fiction submissions can be short stories or novel excerpts, and the nonfiction section is open to personal narratives and essays. While all genres are welcome, special interests include travel, multicultural themes, feminism, and magical realism. Limit submissions to 5,000 words, one submission per candidate. Authors who submit more than one piece will not be considered. Artwork Submissions: Artwork submissions are open to all mediums, but pieces must be submitted electronically. Winning pieces are selected based on composition and originality. The CODA program is seeking an experienced mural artist to produce an original painting on the eastern face of the building in Memphis, TN. Artists’ materials shall be reviewed for selection by a panel of community members and stakeholders. Artists should be prepared to work with community members, college students and stakeholders to facilitate the final design. The selected artist will be announced on or before 12/1/08. Installation timeframe shall be determined by the selected artist in consultation with project stakeholders and community members. The selected artist shall be assisted by Rhodes College students and CODA staff in support roles. Wall dimensions: 148.5 ft. long x 78.6 ft. tall. Area available for painting: 7,472 sq. ft. centered in the upper ¾ of the wall. Budget: $70,000 including materials, equipment and artist fee. Call for Artists for INTERPLAY. The University of Maryland Public Art Project announces a national competition, Interplay that blends several objectives: to create a dynamic environment for public and social engagement, to serve as a contemplative place for individuals to experience contemporary art, and to embrace the scholarly spirit of a distinguished institution of higher education and research. Requests for Qualifications are invited from experienced artists or artist/design teams, to develop a site-specific public artwork/s for the University of Maryland. The work will be part of the renovation of a courtyard in proximity to the university’s visual art and humanities buildings. Three individual projects will be considered, or a design that negotiates the entire space as one concept. The total budget for the project is $450,000. (posted 8/6/08) Public Art Opportunity - Seattle, WA + King County Correctional Facility Lobby (2 projects). 4Culture is seeking an artist or artists from WA, OR, or BC (Canada) that can make the experience of visiting the King County Correctional Facility lobby more enjoyable for the hundreds of people that pass through it each day. The building already includes two major exterior integrated works: Martha Schwartz’ Jail House Garden and Benson Shaw’s Torus Torum. Both were installed when the building was constructed. Artist Made Seating Elements: Functional seating elements that can improve the legibility of reception functions, comfortably accommodate conversation, and help bridge the lobby’s disparate design elements are desired to replace existing wooden benches. Stairwell & Pedestrian Walkway: Integrated low-relief sculpture, murals, large-scale photographic prints, or light-based works are desired to activate the main passage between the first two floors of the building. This includes open space on either side of the facility’s public stairwell, landing wall, and west wall at the top of the stairwell facing an elevated pedestrian walkway. RACC Opportunity: Invitation to Filmmakers. RACC invites filmmakers currently living in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington Counties to submit original short videos for a new pilot project, Portland Art Happens. The goal of Portland Art Happens is to excite, stimulate, and inform the 50,000 monthly visitors to the RACC website by showcasing an array of short videos by local filmmakers that portray Portland’s vibrant art scenes. Selected videos will each be posted for two months and reach hundreds of thousands of viewers, providing great exposure to the selected filmmakers. Faith Lutheran Church seeks an artist to create a site-specific sculptural artwork on a wall in the Sanctuary of their church building located in Seattle, Washington.
