7/26-8/17 SABOR DE MAIZ: Arts Workshops. Miracle Theatre presents MAIZ, Movimiento Artístico Intercultural del Zol, a new collective of Latino artists, to El Centro Milagro! This summer, MAIZ will launch its program with a series of bilingual arts workshops. 8/2-3 8th annual Portland Zine Symposium: Back to DIY. Back to Community. Back to the Roots. The symposium is a free two-day conference and social gathering, celebrating independent publishing. The Zine Symposium is a place for people to meet, share ideas, learn, and of course, trade zines. 8/3 Divine Mothers, Dancers and Yoginis: Lecture and Slide Presentation by Miranda Shaw in conjunction with a performance by Dance Mandal, Sahajananda Nritya Gita~ The Spontaneous Bliss of Sacred Dance and Song and an introductory dance and song workshop on August 2 & 3 (see RACC Cultural Calendar at www.racc.org/calendar). Dr. Miranda Shaw, Buddhist scholar and award-winning author (Passionate Enlightenment and Buddhist Goddesses of India), will provide a visual journey into the fascinating world of Buddhist goddess worship in Nepal, including the Living Goddess Kumari and Vajrayogini. Based on her groundbreaking research in Nepal, the talk previews her forthcoming book Buddhist Goddesses of Tibet and Nepal. The program features beautiful, evocative slides of the goddess images, sites, and rituals that Dr. Shaw photographed during her extensive travels in Nepal. She interweaves word and image to communicate a profound, inspiring Buddhist vision of the powerful sacredness of divine females and of human women who embody them in ritual and dance. 7:30-9pm, Dance Mandal Temple, 1405 SE 40th Ave., Portland OR 97214. 8/4-14 Byzantine Iconography Workshop with Heather MacKean. MacKean studied iconology with Richard Schneider, professor emeritus of medieval iconology at York University in Toronto, Ontario. She has lectured at universities and churches throughout North American and Great Britain. She has painted the interiors of many churches including St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Portland, where the workshop will take place. 8/9 Copyrights & Contracts for Artists Workshop with Attorney Peter Vaughan Shaver / Sound Advice, LLC. 8/9, 16, 23, & 30 POV Dance Workshop Series with Mandy Christiansen and Noel Plemmons. New to Portland, Mandy and Noel together form POV Dance. The two will teach a four-week workshop Saturday mornings in August for those with dance experience who are interested in expanding their idea of how and where dance can be created and performed. 8/9 & 21 On Assignment: Fort Vancouver & The Confluence Project. This trip is a chance to photograph in and around the 19th century military Fort Vancouver with photographer Christine Eagon, who has been photographing the area for decades. The trip will also take in the scenic views of the Columbia and Mt. Hood from atop the newly created Confluence Project land bridge. Participants should wear sun hats and good walking shoes, and bring a bag lunch and water. Saturday, 8/9 from 9am-1pm and

8/9-8/20 Workshops at DIY Lounge with instructor Nicole Cipriano. 8/9 Silk Screening 101. Come to this workshop and learn how to transfer drawings and photographs to just about anything by using the photo emulsion silk-screening process. 8/18 Crafting Collage. This basic collage class will teach you techniques utilizing acrylic paint, paper and found objects. 8/20 Cut and Paste Collage. 8/31 & 9/1 Art in the Pearl Artist Talk: Making Fun and Collaborative Art Projects. Art in the Pearl co-founder Greg Wilbur presents a slide show on his experiences as a participant at collaborative art events including Emma Lake/Ness Creek in Saskatoon, Canada and the CollaborationNZ festival in Whangarei, New Zealand, in which 100 artists gathered to create art together for one week. Wilbur has participated in seven collaborative art events, and discusses collaborative works created for Art in the Pearl, on view in The Lab. 2 pm. Open primarily to painters and drawers this class is designed to encourage practicing artists to gain newness in their work through feedback and by establishing regular studio time and work habits. Will look at the individual member’s progressing work and discuss their efforts with them and the group will add comments as appropriate. These structured meetings will be augmented with related but different elements including discussing the work of the masters (both objective and non-objective) and visits by guest artists who will join us to critique or deliver pertinent lectures.The class will meet on the selected Thursday nights to discuss the current artwork of the group’s members. 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Tuition: $335 for current Oregon Society of Artists members. $365 for joining members. 9/8-10 The Grant Institute's Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded. Visiting curators Steven Skov Holt, an internationally recognized design leader, and Mara Holt Skov, an art historian, present a slideshow and lecture on their exhibition Manuf®actured at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 NW Davis. 9/19-21 Master Black & White Printing Class with John Wimberley. The Master Printing Class is open to all black and white film photographers who already possess basic printing skills, and who want to take their printing to a higher level. Because a fine print requires a fine negative, each photographer will have an opportunity for their negatives and prints to be critiqued by John Wimberley. Will examine all aspects of printing, from choice of paper and processing chemistry to optimum conditions for evaluating wet prints. Among the subjects to be presented will be techniques to arrive most quickly at the final print, thus saving time and materials, matching contrast and print exposure to the visualized image, dodging and burning effectively and invisibly, toning, processing and presentation for archival permanence. 9/21 Portland Art Museum Lecture~Rembrandt: Master Printmaker. Special Lecture in conjunction with Celebrating Prints: Recent Acquisitions. Annette Dixon, Ph.D., the Portland Art Museum’s Curator of Prints and Drawings, will discuss Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn’s innovative approach to printmaking. Rembrandt explored the expressive possibilities of etching and drypoint to reinvigorate well-known subjects, capture the mind’s inner workings and suggest the presence of the divine in everyday life. Using 17th-century Amsterdam as a backdrop, Dixon will illuminate the historical and social context of his work and his impact on artists for more than 400 years. 2pm, Portland Art Museum, 1219 SW Park. From 9/25 - Oct Author-Editor Clinic Manuscript Session ~ Fall 2008. If 2008’s the year to get your novel, memoir, or nonfiction manuscript in shape, now’s the time to think ahead. The Seattle-based Author-Editor Clinic has been helping authors revise, clarify, expand, trim, and polish their books-in-progress since 2004. 9/27 Oregon Library Association's 2008 Performer's Showcase (10am-4pm) in Salem, OR. Previous showcases have provided Oregon librarians, parks and recreation staff, and teachers who schedule children's programs the opportunity to see first hand a wide variety of performing artists. Feedback from performers has also been tremendously positive because the showcase enables them to display their talents before many prospective "buyers" at one time. Each performer will be given only five minutes to demonstrate a representative sampling of his or her work. (posted 8/7/08) 10/25-26 Pastel Landscape Workshop with Eve Kenyon will be held at Trail’s End Art Association Art Center, Gearhart, Oregon. The goal of the workshop is for participants to paint a complete landscape. Eve helps attendees uncover an emotional connection to their image. Thumbnail sketches are made to establish a focal point and perceive values. Color studies, color theory and application techniques are produced to insure a strong foundation for the work of art. A “fresh air” landscape exercise will take place out-of-doors using viewfinders to produce thumbnail sketches which determine light source, value patterns, focal point, format and composition. Participants study in a supportive, energetic atmosphere. Eve provides individual instruction, demonstrations and take-home reference materials.
