Intentional Outreach and Recruitment Strategies

This year, in an effort to recruit more teaching artists that reflect the students we serve, our Community Engagement team at YA is leveraging our partnerships with culturally-specific and culturally-responsive organizations to work towards diversifying our applicant pool.

The Right Brain Initiative serves more than 40 schools located on the periphery of YA’s tri-county service area (Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties) and yet we do not have enough artists on our teaching roster that live in or near the zip codes of those schools. Additionally, as the composition of our region continues to change, we are faced by the urgency to recruit more bilingual/bicultural Spanish-speaking teaching artists to meet the needs of our partner schools with Spanish immersion programs and/or predominantly Spanish-speaking students. YA has an ongoing partnership with Latino Network and Milepost 5 and we are building on those partnerships by holding information sessions at their offices and strategically reaching out to the communities they serve. Latino Network offers a variety of services to the Latino Community all across Multnomah County, including school-based and community-based programming in East Portland. Milepost 5 is an affordable housing community for working artists of all disciplines and is located in the Montavilla neighborhood.

Additionally, we are strengthening our partnership with Centro Cultural of Washington County and building a relationship with Hillsboro’s Shute Park Library. Centro Cultural has been serving the Latino community in Washington County since 1972 and has evolved throughout the years as the needs of the community have changed. Shute Park Library has been developing and implementing culturally-responsive programming to also meet the needs of the rapidly changing demographics of Hillsboro. We believe that collaborating and learning from organizations that have been doing the work is the most effective way to authentically connect with the communities we are trying to reach.
