Position Summary

The Accountant 1 for Research Finance and Business Administration provides financial and technical support to all of Research and Innovation Services (IIT, SPS, RDS, RCS, RTS, AWS, RCBS, RFBA) and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. This position regularly interacts with faculty and staff in the schools and colleges, as well as outside third-party constituents.

Duties for this position include processing budget changes, fund transfers, deposits, invoice payments, and journal vouchers, as well as reconciling accounts, processing travel documents and reimbursements, making credit card purchases, and managing foundation check disbursements, payroll documents, contracts, and purchase orders.

This position creates and compiles financial reports from multiple sources (Banner, Cognos) to be used in University reports, budgeting, and in both external and internal audits. Research office expenditures must be carefully monitored for compliance with state, grant, and UO Foundation regulations and guidelines. The Accountant 1 reports to the Divisional Budget Director. Non-routine or unusual decisions will be made in consultation with supervisor or appropriate manager, with routine corrections handled by this position independently.

The complex nature of this position requires the ability and skill to track transactions and/or errors through an account from initiation to resolution. The position must be able to identify gaps in the internal accounting infrastructure as new software and other accounting changes occur, make recommendations for resolutions for our accounting systems to resolve issues and ensure timely processing is done on a monthly basis.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with CPA or PA certificate; OR

• Bachelor’s degree with 30 quarter (20 semester) hours of college-level Accounting, OR

• 30 quarter (20 semester) hours of Accounting courses and three years of Accounting experience.*

*Accounting experience must include at least 3 of the following:
Preparing transactions to be recorded in records of original entry;
Preparing journal entries, posting from journals to general ledger, or preparing original general ledger entries;
Summarizing data from a ledger to a trial balance;
Closing accounts at the end of an accounting period;
Applying PC spreadsheet, database, and word processing software;
Processing data using a computer.

Transcripts must be submitted for all required and/or related courses. All courses must be from accredited colleges, universities, or private vocational schools.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to learn, analyze, understand, and explain university and government policies, rules, and regulations.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Strong communication skills, independent judgment, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

• Ability to set priorities, take initiative, be proactive and follow-up, manage diverse responsibilities and multiple tasks.

• Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and methods.

Preferred Qualifications

• Fund accounting experience.

• Familiarity/experience with Microsoft Office and other software programs such as: Word, Excel, Outlook, Inteum, AiM, Concur, Adobe Acrobat, and HRIS/FIS platforms such as Banner.

• Experience working in a university or higher education setting.
