Costume Shop Assistant/Stitcher

Position Summary:

Portland Center Stage seeks a skilled team member for the costume shop. The Costume Shop Assistant/Stitcher works in a full-time, seasonal shop with a manager, two cutter/drapers, a crafts artisan, and a wardrobe supervisor. This position assists the costume shop supervisor and costume designers on show-related projects like paperwork, costume pulling and purchasing, and assisting in technical rehearsals. The Costume Shop Assistant/Stitcher will also work as a stitcher as needed, reporting to the cutter/drapers, so strong sewing abilities are a plus. The ideal candidate has great interpersonal, teamwork, design assisting, and organization skills, along with costume construction abilities. The ideal candidate will also be self-motivated, an excellent collaborator, and good with time/project management. It is critical that the Costume Shop Assistant/Stitcher upholds the PCS IDEA Community Values and Guidelines.

Essential Responsibilities

Creates measurement cheat sheets, rack tags, and other related shop set up labels/paperwork for each production for high quality organization
Works with the costume shop supervisor to create both digital/Dropbox and hard copy show bibles to include designer sketches, research, and fitting photos for each production; continues to upkeep show bibles through the season
Pulls and restocks costumes, assists in the restocking and organization of costume storage
Stocks fitting room with supplies and maintains the fitting area organization
Assists shop supervisor with setting up and fulfilling fitting requests
Takes notes and fitting photos for drapers during fittings to be stored digitally and in costume bibles; works with cutter/drapers and the costume crafts artisan before and after fittings to ensure all costume pieces are accounted for
Assists costume shop supervisor for both shop and show related sourcing, shopping, and returns both online and local.
Assists in maintaining all fabric, storage, and general costume shop inventory
Sews, either by machine or hand, the costumes assigned by cutter/drapers when needed
Maintains and prioritizes work on stitching projects by communicating work needs to cutter/drapers and costume shop supervisor
Communicates with cutter/drapers and costume shop supervisor concerning problems and their possible solutions
Works with costume shop supervisor to assist designers during the tech process (This can include taking turns in tech with costume shop supervisor to prevent exhaustion)
Models equity and anti-racism principles in all interactions
Performs other duties as assigned by costume shop supervisor and production manager.

Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge

Experience working in a professional costume shop
Experience in costume design assisting
Experience in costume construction
Demonstrated experience in a variety of hand/machine sewing techniques
Ability to maintain high levels of organization and time management
Computer paperwork skills either on PC or Mac (documentation, charts, etc.)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to lift 40 pounds and occasionally work with ladders and stairs
Work hours are daytime Monday-Friday with occasional weekends and nights during technical rehearsals
Must be able to plan and prioritize in a changing work environment

Salary and Benefits

Full-time, non-exempt, seasonal.
$18.00/hr, approximately 40 hours a week.
Seasonal work can range from 40-46 weeks a year, and is typically from mid-August through early June.
