The Diversity Advisory Committee of the Friends of the Multnomah County Library (FOL) is seeking an artist to
design and paint a permanent mural for Rose City Reads, a gently used bookstore in East Portland. The store
was recently ranked the #4 Best Bookstore in Portland by The Oregonian readers. It’s located at 221 NE 122nd Avenue, Suite A.
Established in 2023, Rose City Reads is operated by FOL, a nonprofit advocacy organization founded in 1972 that
provides supplemental funding for all 19 locations of the Multnomah County Library. Proceeds from book and media
sales directly support library programs, services, and community access initiatives.
FOL’s Diversity Advisory Committee is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across the
organization. Rose City Reads reflects these values through its multilingual collections, large print books, audiobooks,
cultural heritage spotlights, and community-centered programming.
This mural represents one of the committee’s first major initiatives to bring these values into the physical space.
The mural should:
● Create a welcoming and engaging first impression
● Reflect themes of diversity, inclusion, community, and reading
● Appeal to a broad, multigenerational audience
● Complement the existing bookstore environment
This opportunity is open to individual artists and artist teams with experience in mural design and/or large-scale
artwork.
Artists from underrepresented communities—including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, Black, Indigenous, and people
of color (BIPOC), people with disabilities, and veterans—are strongly encouraged to apply.
