Experimenting with the relationship between text and image can push a narrative into surprising, new terrain. The hybrid genre of visual writing is wonderfully flexible and fraught with the potential to inform and rethink the act of storytelling. On the page, essays and stories have taken on the actual curves of a river, poems have threaded their language into the core of cultural artifacts, and memoirs have settled into each pixel of a family photo. All these modes of discovery (and more) are figuratively—and literally—possible in visual writing.
In this five-week course at the Attic Institute of Arts & Letters, writers will receive an in-depth introduction to visual writing and the work of published visual writers, finish their own work(s) of text and image, and end the course with the new capacity that this hybrid genre provides for any writing practice. No artistic/visual experience necessary and supplies will be provided. Please just bring a pair of scissors.
