Classification: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, 1.0 FTE

Compensation: $19.30 per hour

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Latino Network’s mission is to provide transformative opportunities, services and advocacy for the education, leadership and civic engagement of our youth, families and communities. Our work springs from the core belief in Latino community self determination—that is, the ability of community members to participate meaningfully in the decisions that affect their lives and the lives of their families. We build and manage collaborative and energetic teams to implement high quality, culturally inclusive programs. We actively partner across a variety of city, county, state and community organizations to deliver training and support, a wide range of services, as well as influence policy.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position will be responsible for working as part of a team to coordinate, plan and implement MEChA student affinity clubs for middle school youth. MEChA is an acronym for Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (Chicano Student Movement of Aztlán). MEChA promotes consciousness raising, leadership skills, self and group respect, cultural preservation and pride in order to empower students. This is an opportunity to promote pride, positive cultural identity and leadership among Latinx youth and make a lasting impact on young people’s experiences in school and in their community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works as a team to implement two MEChA student group meetings per month at each site, either during lunch or after school, depending on the needs of the students and the school, which includes an average of ten students per site.
Integrates MEChA curriculum with a focus on cultural identity and students’ experiences within schools, home, and community to develop solidarity, support and a sense of belonging.
Provides connections and opportunities that relate to culturally specific role models and other resources.
Leverages the relationships of Latino Network staff in our existing programming and partners with school staff and administrators to recruit.
Provides virtual group engagement opportunities as well as access to service navigation to meet the basic needs of students and their families.
Schedules meeting times and duration at each school according to student availability, with a preference for scheduling during a lunch period, or for 45 minutes after school ends, or an equivalent time.
Increases sense of belonging among participating youth.
Facilitates monthly meetings including facilitated discussions among youth participants, building on relationships within the group and connecting the students with participants at other sites, other programs such as Latino Network’s Conexiones program, and other individuals in the community.
Increases positive cultural identity among participating youth.
Connects students with individuals and organizations in the community to explore and affirm Latinx identity and culture, and provides culturally specific curriculum centered on Latinx culture, history, and identity.
Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
Respectfully takes direction from Supervisor.
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience, plus minimum one year related experience working with youth and families.
Experience developing, implementing, and facilitating classes for youth.
Excellent bilingual (English and Spanish) skills in both written and verbal communications.
Experience in community organizing, outreach and advocacy.
Knowledge of culturally based world-view and problem solving practices of Latino individuals and families in urban neighborhoods impacted by racial inequity, poverty and structural barriers required, bicultural preferred.
Strong desire to promote educational equity in the community.
Ability to work well independently and within a team.
Ability to be flexible and creative in the work environment.
Ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
Good follow-through.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to tolerate and thrive in a fluid situation where plans change based on new information.
Respect for diversity; desire and ability to work cross-culturally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Latino Network is a fast-paced, highly engaged work environment with satellite operations with

positions performing work both onsite and remotely. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
