Multnomah Arts Center, a program of Portland Parks & Recreation, is currently looking for Ceramics Technician. Multnomah Arts Center, a program of Portland Parks & Recreation, is currently looking for a qualified, responsible, organized and self-starting individual to join our team of clay studio technicians.
Starting pay rate is $17.20 – $19.45 per hour, depending on experience.
• Maximum pay is currently $22.20 per hour after 5 years.
• This position is part-time (maximum 1600 hours per year).
• This position does not include benefits.

Work Schedule
• MAC is currently seeking a technician to work Fridays from 12:15 – 3:15, Saturdays 11:15 am – 4:15 pm, and who is available to cover other shifts as needed. This position has the potential for growth and qualified applicants will also be considered for future teaching opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Physical Requirements
• Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. (a box of clay or glaze bucket).
• Ability to shovel clay slip into mixer, extract a 350 lbs. batch and process through clay pugger.
• Ability to load and unload ware weighing up to 25 lbs. into 38” high electric kilns and cone 10 gas kilns that are 3 feet deep.
• Ability to work for extended periods of time in an outdoor environment.

Technical Experience
• Familiarity with ceramic arts, production, glazes and kiln loading and unloading best practices.
• Familiarity with cone 10 reduction firing and glaze materials.
• Knowledge of safe use of materials and equipment and ability to communicate this to students.
• Safety knowledge of clay studio hazards: working with dry materials and handling all phases of greenware through final glazed ware.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to foster a positive, supportive environment for a diverse student base.
• Comfortable working in a busy community studio, answering students’ clay and glaze material questions, directing workflow in the studio.

• Can work with the changing demands of our community and contribute with enthusiasm.
• Has extensive experience working with a variety of clay bodies and mixing wet and dry glaze material.
• Works well with others and is comfortable sharing a space with instructors, fellow techs and has a working knowledge of common studio rules.
• Is passionate about ceramic arts in a community arts setting.
• Raku Kiln firing experience.
