RACC Opportunity: Education Specialist

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) is seeking a new team member with successful teaching experience in K-8 classrooms. A strong background in schools with a focus on equity, arts integration, literacy, student engagement and creating collaborative cultures in schools is essential. This position supports two arts education programs at RACC: The Right Brain Initiative and the Arts Education and Access Fund.

Status:                  0.7 FTE (Flexible schedule, 32 hours per week, 46 weeks, August to June), Non-Exempt
Schedule:           Generally this position follows RACC regular business hours (M-F, 8:30am-5:00pm), but                 flexibility is required – including some early morning and evening work
Supervisor:        Director of Arts Education
Compensation:    $45,000 to $53,000 plus pro-rated benefits based on FTE

Position summary:

75%        Work collaboratively with principals, classroom teachers, district instructional coaches and arts specialists to support K-8 school-based teacher teams in implementing whole school arts integration

25%        Support RACC arts education team with communications and program development and evaluation

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with teacher leadership teams to support a schoolwide implementation plan for arts integration that increases student engagement, equity and success in the classroom
  • Provide support, modeling and guidance to teachers and district-level instructional coaches on arts integration and culturally-relevant practices
  • Assist schools in building an interactive classroom and school environment focused on the content and learning strategies embedded in Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and the National Core Arts Standards and culturally-relevant pedagogy
  • Provide formal and informal staff development/training for classroom teachers and administrators around instructional strategies, student engagement and peer leadership, related to both research and practice
  • Coordinate services to support a network of arts specialists across multiple school districts
  • Investigate and disseminate information on best practices for arts integration, national sources of information on trends, research and applications related to arts in schools
  • Support RACC’s research and evaluation on the impact of arts education and arts integration
  • Speak to larger audiences including school boards, parent groups and other community stakeholders on the power of the arts and arts integration
  • Work collaboratively with RACC’s arts education team to support the organization’s vision and create a cohesive and respectful working environment

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience in K-8 classrooms with a focus on ELA and literacy, master’s degree preferred
  • Experience in using arts integration to engage students in the classroom
  • An understanding of education standards across K-8 grades
  • Ability to support professional development, especially in the areas of equity, arts integration, literacy, student engagement and collaborative school cultures
  • An understanding of educational trends related to equity and a commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment and equitable school communities
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively plan with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Experience in aligning subject areas with an emphasis on the arts
  • Knowledge of, experience or training in an arts discipline
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Google applications
  • Ability to travel throughout the Portland metropolitan area
  • Bilingual abilities in Chinese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, or Vietnamese

The Right Brain Initiative is a sustainable partnership of public schools, local government, foundations, businesses and the cultural community, which brings creativity to over 27,500 students in 68 schools. About the Arts Education and Access Fund

In November of 2012, 62% of Portland voters approved an Arts Education and Access Fund (AEAF) or the “arts tax” as it is commonly known. The City of Portland collects the tax and administers the funds. Thanks to the arts tax, every elementary school in Portland’s six school districts (Centennial, David Douglas, Parkrose, Portland Public, Reynolds and Riverdale) now has at least one art, music or dance teacher on staff—91 teachers total. The AEAF funds 72 of these teachers, one arts specialist for every 500 students.
