RACC Public Art Opportunity: 136th Avenue Retaining Wall Murals

Deadline March 30, 2016

CALL FOR ARTISTS: 136th Avenue Retaining Wall Murals
Portland, Oregon
Deadline:  March 30, 2016

The Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland, Oregon, invites artists living in Oregon and Washington to submit qualifications for related murals on two City-owned retaining walls on opposite sides of SE 136th & Mitchell in Portland’s Powellhurst Neighborhood.  One artist/team will be selected for a project budget of approximately $30,000. The deadline for submissions is 10:59 PM, Wednesday, March 30, 2016.

The Selection Panel seeks an artist/team to create original artworks that will cover most or all of two concrete retaining walls located on the east and west sides of SE 136th Avenue between SE Mitchell and SE Raymond. The west retaining wall is 125 ft long (approx. 750 sq ft) and the east retaining wall is 226 ft long (approx.1356 sq ft). Each wall varies in height from 3 ft to 10 ft at the highest point. Immediately behind the retaining walls are private single family residences. The murals will be visible while driving, walking or biking along the street and the design should take that into consideration. The materials, design and palette must stand up to local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. Artists interested in applying are strongly encouraged to visit the site.
