As Development Assistant, Mia supports strategies, planning and implementation of all fundraising activities, campaigns and special events for the Right Brain Initiative. She is also a paper and visual/installation artist working from her home studio in North Portland. Her art practice varies from fine art to interactive public installations. She graduated from California College of the Arts in 2007 with a degree in Community Arts (art integrated education and community building). She has worked as both a teaching artist and administrator at the Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland, California.
In 2008, she moved to the Kochi Prefecture of Japan where she lived for 5 years. While living in Japan, she learned the traditional art of washi (Japanese paper making), taught English, was a volunteer artist at the Garaku Center, an art space for youth and adults with developmental disabilities and was a singer/songwriter. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 2014 and while she hails from the balmy warm island of Kauai, Hawaii, she has fallen in love the rainy creative community here in Portland.
