PHAME is a fine and performing arts academy serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Located in Portland, Oregon, and also operating online, our education and performance programs empower students to learn new skills, take artistic risks, and build lasting relationships with people who share their experience of having a disability.

Job Overview

  • Job Title: Campus Coordinator “B”
  • Job Type: Part-Time/ Non-Exempt, approximately 20 hours/ week
  • Job Location: In-person, 1535 NE 17th, Portland, OR 97232
  • Benefits Include:
    • Holiday pay: Employee will be paid for regularly scheduled hours that fall on PHAME holidays. However, if classes are not scheduled (for instance, there are no classes the week of Thanksgiving), employees are not paid.
  • Reports to: Enrollment & Campus Operations Manager and Education Manager
  • Pay rate & hours:
    • Weekly schedule is three days a week scheduled within Monday – Thursday. Shifts start at 10:15 AM and go until 5:15 PM or 6:15 PM depending on the day. Hours include a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
    • Work is paid at $20/ hour unless CC-B is asked to step in as a substitute Teaching Artist. Substitute Teaching is paid at $30/ hour.
    • CC-B attends monthly paid meetings on first Fridays, 10 AM – noon, online. Meetings are paid at $20/ hour.

This position is scheduled only during PHAME’s terms:

  • Fall Term: September 30 – December 12, 2024 (No programming during Thanksgiving week)
  • Winter Term: January 13 – March 20, 2025
  • Spring Term: March 31 – June 5, 2025
  • Summer and future term hours are TBD

Job Summary:

As CC-B, you will play a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for PHAME students. Reporting to both the Enrollment & Campus Operations Manager and the Education Manager, you will split your time between classroom set up and support, equipment and supply management, and interfacing with students. The successful CC-B will be a friendly, team-oriented, self-starter who knows how to stay organized and level-headed in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

CC-B is also hired as a Substitute Teaching Artist in PHAME’s education program and will be tapped to sub when Teaching Artists are absent. Substitute teaching will happen during CC-B’s regular working hours, and CC-B will be given a lesson plan to review prior to class start. CC-B may have the opportunity to teach a class of their own in future terms. The ideal candidate will be a practicing artist with prior teaching experience who is passionate about supporting others in their creative journey.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Classroom Support: Assist with the set-up and tear-down of art classes, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
  • Teaching Artist and Student Assistance: Provide support to Teaching Artists and students during classes, fostering a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Equipment Management: Organize and track program equipment to ensure everything is in order.
  • Closing Duties: Help with end-of-day tasks to maintain campus safety and organization.
  • Additional Campus Support: Collaborate with the other Campus Coordinator (CC-A) during busy periods and cover their duties during breaks or absences (duties include serving as a liaison with TriMet Lift drivers, greeting students, taking attendance, light cleaning, and supporting select online classes).
  • Substitute Teaching: Serve as a Substitute Teaching Artist as needed, utilizing provided lesson plans. When substitute teaching, CC-B will have up to 30 minutes to review the lesson plan and prep materials (at $20/hr) and additional set up and tear down time (at $30/hr). Classes will be in person or online. Substitute teaching assignments will be paid at the substitute teaching rate. Paid teacher training will be provided.

Other Responsibilities

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students and staff in a fast-paced setting.
  • Assist students with interpersonal conflicts and support individual students with self-regulation.
  • Maintain knowledge of PHAME’s Emergency Action Plan and adhere to emergency and incident reporting protocols.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings.
  • Review and contribute to documents used by all staff for sharing insights and strategies for working with and accommodating specific students.
  • Write and read incident reports and incident logs.
  • Perform additional administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Occasional evening and weekend event support.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
  • At least three years of progressively responsible work experience, including at least one year of teaching experience with groups of students.
  • Experience working in person with a team.
  • Shows initiative and the ability to organize oneself.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and to multi-task/prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to facilitate conflict resolution.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and decision-making capabilities and to maintain confidentiality as needed.
  • Experience working with A/V equipment preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with an array of artistic mediums.
  • Ability to teach provided curriculum for a variety of classes.

Education & Other Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in an art form, or equivalent experience.
  • Must be a resident of Oregon or Washington.

Working Conditions & Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

This work is primarily performed in person at Grace Memorial Church, where PHAME runs its Education Program. The majority of the work involves moving around campus, moving around a classroom, and moving/handling program supplies and equipment up to 35 lbs, however a smaller portion of the job is spent sitting. Some work will also occur next door in the PHAME office; this building has stairs and is not currently wheelchair accessible.

This position requires complex decision making.

This position has minimal meetings.

This is an in-person position, however meetings and some classroom support and substitute teaching may be performed online.
