Summer Arts in the Park Facilitator Sought
Hope & Bread City Mission, a church for people of all faiths and people of none, serves dinner to 30-40 unsheltered East Portlanders every Sunday evening at 5pm. Thanks to a grant from SE Uplift, we are offering “Arts in the Park” and seeking a teaching artist/arts facilitator who will be with us on summer Sundays between July 13 and September 7, as well as curate and hang an October show at a nearby non-profit.
We have budget for art supplies, storage, and set-up help. We seek a teacher who is eager to bring out the creative gifts of people who don’t usually have the opportunity to write or make art. While the emphasis is on process rather than product, art to show and sell, as well as—possibly—a zine co-created by some in the gathered community would be a powerful witness to the value of creativity and community art-making in the lives of all people, regardless of housing status.
DUTIES:
- Be present on Sunday evenings
- Source needed supplies
- Coordinate with on-site volunteers and others helping with set-up each week
- Encourage and support artists
- Co-design and facilitate a group project: painting, zine, collage, anything
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ease and eagerness to work with people on the margins
- Facility with a variety of visual art media: watercolor, modeling clay, pen-and-ink, gouache, pastels, collage, etc.
- Exhibit experience
- A love of writing or reading poetry
- Experience with creating a zine
- A heart for collaborative creativity
COMPENSATION: $1000-$1200 stipend for 7-8 Sunday evenings plus curating a small exhibit in October.
NOTE: We know that women and minorities often do not apply for positions if they do not possess all of the listed qualifications. We encourage everyone with art therapy or arts education experience and a heart for the work described here to apply.
APPLICATION: Please send a letter of interest and resume to hopeandbread@gmail.com by June 30.
