About Lan Su Chinese Garden: More than just a botanical garden, Lan Su Chinese Garden opened in 2000 through a collaboration between Portland and its sister city, Suzhou. Built by Suzhou artisans, it stands as one of the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of China. Inspired by Ming dynasty scholars’ gardens, Lan Su evokes beauty, provokes thought, and offers over 500 programs annually through community partnerships. The Program and Community Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role in developing and implementing culturally relevant programming that aligns with Lan Su’s mission to inspire, engage, and educate a global community in the appreciation of a richly authentic Chinese culture. This role works closely with the Vice President of Culture & Community in the production, development, and evaluation of Lan Su’s cultural festivals, community outreach initiatives.
In this essential capacity, the Program and Community Engagement Manager oversees the comprehensive implementation of cultural and community outreach programs. This entails refining program procedures, cultivating beneficial partnerships with community collaborators, overseeing program scheduling and execution, supervising community outreaches, volunteer recruitment and training, and documenting program outcomes.
Cultural Programs
- Project manager of Lan Su’s signature festivals, programs, and ticketed events that align with Lan Su’s annual cultural campaigns and organizational goals.
- Manage individual program budget and monitor expenses.
- Collaborate closely with the Visitor Services Manager in program execution and staff training.
- Oversee the coordination, communication, and operational management of schedules with program partners and community collaborators.
- Collaborate closely with the marketing team to provide program updates for external promotional materials, including but not limited to printed brochures, organizational websites, e-newsletters, and social media copies.
- Supervise the procurement, upkeep, and documentation of educational collections and program supplies.
- Develop and uphold the program operation manual for streamlined operations
- Manage and guide program staff and volunteers to ensure an exceptional visitor experience.
- Monitor, document, and report regularly on program participation and outcomes.
- Evaluate visitor interactions with programs and provide recommendations to the Vice President of Culture & Community for enhancements or alterations.
Leadership
- Co-manage the Marketing and Community Associate.
- Initiate positive cross-department partnerships within the organization in festival and program planning.
- Participate in weekly program meetings and monthly staff meetings.
- Support member and donor events and fundraisers as needed.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a program and event manager or equivalent. management roles within cultural, educational, or art industries.
- Proven track record in project management demonstrating successful execution.
- Proficient coordination and management of volunteers with a track record of success.
- Previous experience establishing connections with children and families.
- Demonstrated expertise in efficiently executing events and programs.
- Demonstrated employment history showcasing punctuality.
- Proficiency in computer operations, including Word, Excel, & Outlook.

- Self-motivated and self-directed in tasks and responsibilities.
- Strong awareness and insight into current trends in Chinese and Asian American cultures.
- Familiarity with Chinese culture and language is preferred and not required.
