Rural Artist-in-Residency

Deadline August 31, 2025

Resident artists will live and work on-site at the M.T. Liggett Art Environment in Mullinville, Kansas, for 4–6 weeks, residing in a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment at the Visitors Center, complete with kitchen and laundry amenities. The artist will have access to studio space, tools, materials, outdoor acreage, and the nearby 5.4.7 Arts Center in Greensburg. Each artist will receive a $250 weekly stipend and up to $1,000 in travel support.

In return, residents are expected to contribute 6–10 hours per week to community engagement and site stewardship. This may include front desk volunteering, sculpture maintenance (for qualified metalworkers), landscaping, or hosting public programs or talks. Additionally, artists must contribute a work created during their stay to the 5.4.7 Arts Center’s permanent collection. (The 5.4.7 Arts Center is the parent organization that the M.T. Liggett Art Environment is umbrellaed under.)

The residency is open to creatives across disciplines, including visual, performing, literary, media, and musical arts. Preference is given to self-taught artists, educators, veterans, first responders, and those skilled in metalwork or restoration. Applicants must be 18 or older, have a personal vehicle due to the residency’s rural location, and be comfortable living and working independently in a rural setting. Due to location and safety considerations, children and pets cannot be accommodated, and lodging is only accessible via stairs. English fluency is strongly recommended for effective participation.
